Jefferson County Public Schools heads back into session on Tuesday. It will be Superintendent Donna Hargens' third academic year—and the third year for the school district's strategic plan, Vision 2015.

In that span of time, JCPS had made many changes—including the adoption of national Common Core standards, student assignment changes and several collaborations to address student achievement.

On Wednesday, Hargens and other administrator gave an update on where Vision 2015 stands now. She noted that this will be the first year where test scores released later this year will lend to direct comparisons. But she says other measure show progress.

“What we do know is that college and career readiness is up—it went up double-digits in '11-'12," Hargens said after her presentation. "Our graduation rates has gone up. So those two indicators, which are apples-to-apples indicators, actually have gone up. So we are seeing progress. Again, we’re going to look at the data as it comes out and make sure we have all the plans and that we’re implementing the plans.”

This 2013-14 school year will be focused on fully implementing the strategic plan and executing it, Hargens said.

(Hargens will join WFPL's Devin Katayama for a news special at 1 p.m. Friday. Tune in to 89.3 or stream at WFPL.org.)
