Waterfront Independence Festival Has Uncertain Future

This year may be the last for the Waterfront Independence Festival. The two-day event at Waterfront Park featuring free music, children’s activities and fireworks has been losing money since 2008.

The festival is now in its 15th year and usually has an attendance of about 150,000. Waterfront Development Corporation spokeswoman Ashley Smith says the festival brings people together from all over the city.

"We’ve worked really hard to create an event where people from every corner of the community, old, young, can stand side by side at a festival and enjoy each other’s company and enjoy the entertainment. And that has been one of the really wonderful things about this festival is that it attracts such a diverse audience and we have worked and strategically planned for that," she said.

A support group called Friends of the Waterfront plans to collect donations at the event Wednesday and Thursday.  Waterfront officials also plan to set target dates to raise funds to support the festival in the future.
