Work Begins to Drain Chemicals at Derailment Site

Update 4:45 p.m.: Crews working to offload dangerous chemicals at the train derailment site in southwestern Jefferson County got a later-than-expected start Tuesday morning because of the weather, MetroSafe said.

Crews finished offloading a butadiene car in the afternoon, after starting at about 11:30 a.m. -- a couple of hours later than expected, said Jody Duncan, a spokeswoman for MetroSafe.

The area around the derailment site was muddy, and crews had a difficult time setting up equipment, Duncan said.

Fiscal Cliff Would Only Dent The Deficit

Virtually everyone agrees that allowing the nation to fall off the fiscal cliff would be a bad thing.

Government programs would be cut, taxes would rise significantly on a majority of Americans, and according to the Congressional Budget Office, the economy would fall back into recession.

But get this: Even if all of those things happen, there would still be a budget deficit.

President Obama has been re-elected, a new Congress is taking shape and the American citizenry is ready to move on to tackle the various challenging issues before the nation.

Report: Eleven Staffers in Commonwealth's Attorney's Office Won't Be Retained

Jefferson County Commonwealth's Attorney-elect Tom Wine

The incoming Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney is planning some personnel changes in the office.

Tom Wine has informed 11 people who worked under his predecessor — including five prosecutors — that they will not be retained, according to the Courier-Journal.

Wine will take over as commonwealth's attorney in January, replacing the retiring Dave Stengel.

Earthquake Stronger Than Saturday's Possible in Kentucky

Saturday’s earthquake in southeast Kentucky may have some residents worried about the potential for a stronger quake. 

While considered  light, Saturday’s 4.3 earthquake  centered near Whitesburg, could be felt in Lexington and Cincinnati.  Compare that to the 6.0 quake that hit Virginia last year, damaging structures in Washington D-C.  

Such a strong quake here cannot be ruled out, Kentucky Geological Survey Geologic Hazards Director Zehnming Wang said.

Yum Center Projects Higher Profits, Olympic Trials Bid

Officials are projecting higher earnings than expected for the KFC Yum! Center through June of next year and have also announced their intention to bid next month to host the 2016 Olympic swim trials.

Los Angeles-based AEG took over management of the KFC Yum! Center from the Kentucky State Fair Board this year. AEG was charged with bringing in $1 million in profit this fiscal year and booking at least 20 events, according to marketing manager Sandra Kendall.
