With Rep. Ben Chandler's loss last night to Republican challenger Andy Barr, John Yarmuth of Louisville is now the only Democrat in Kentucky's federal delegation.

But he's now working on plans to bring more of his colleagues from the commonwealth to Washington after the 2014 election.

“I welcome the opportunity to be the spokesperson for a national policy that espouses a support for the middle class in the country," Yarmuth said in an interview with WFPL News.

Republicans Pick Up Seats in Kentucky House, Fall Short of Majority

Overall, Tuesday provided a great night for Kentucky Republicans, who narrowed their minority Kentucky House of Representatives.

But the GOP fell well short of their goal of winning 10 seats and taking control of the state House.

Even though they remain the minority, GOP spokesman Joe Burgan says his party has reason to celebrate.

Americans elected Barack Obama to a second term Tuesday, with the president capturing or on the verge of winning all of the key states that had been at the center of his hard-fought campaign against Republican Mitt Romney.

"Whether I earned your vote or not, I have listened to you," Obama said early Wednesday at a speech before thousands of supporters in Chicago. "I have learned from you. And you've made me a better president.

The euphoria of Barack Obama's supporters on election night four years ago was replaced Tuesday by relief, as the incumbent president won a second term over Republican Mitt Romney in an effort powered more by organization than by ideas.

To retain the White House, Obama managed to overcome the handicap of an economy just finding its footing after a devastating recession, and an unemployment rate higher than it's been under any president seeking re-election since Franklin Roosevelt during the Great Depression.

Massie Wins in Fourth District Congressional Race

Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District seat will remain Republican.

Republican Thomas Massie has defeated Democrat Bill Adkins for the seat vacated by Geoff (Jeff) Davis last summer.

Tea Party supporters gave Massie a large financial boost in the primary elections to help him beat two well known Republicans.

Massie says the Tea Party has a strong presence in Congress and District 4 constituents have similar concerns: jobs and the economy.

John Yarmuth Cruises to Victory

Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth has won re-election by 30 percentage points over Republican challenger Brooks Wicker in the Third Congressional District race.

Wicker had struggled throughout the race to raise money for the campaign and didn’t run any TV ads. The race was never considered close, and observers argue the wide margin this year makes Yarmuth tougher to beat in future elections.

Yarmuth says he hopes the message of the race is that he listens to constituents but is able to explain how policies in Washington affect their lives.
