John Schnatter: Papa John's Franchisees May Cut Hours Because of Obamacare

John Schnatter, founder and chief executive of Louisville-based Papa John's, said last week that some of the company's franchisees were likely to reduce employees' hours to avoid offering health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

"That's probably what's going to happen," Schnatter told college students on Wednesday in Naples, Fla., according the Naples Daily News. "It's common sense. That's what I call lose-lose."

EKU Presidential Search Moving Forward

A consulting team hired to help with the search for a new Eastern Kentucky University president is on campus this week.

Current President Doug Whitlock is retiring effective next summer.

“The role of these consultants is not to select our next president rather they’re gonna help ensure that the search and the selection process is managed effectively and that we achieve our goal in securing the next best president for the university and the future of the institution,” said EKU Presidential Search and Screening Committee Chairman Craig Turner.

Paula Broadwell, the woman whose extramarital affair with retired Gen. David Petraeus led to his resignation Friday from the post of CIA director, is a major in the Army Reserve who specializes in counterterrorism issues. She's also the author of All In: The Education of General David Petraeus, a biography of the former top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.

Third Meeting on Floyds Fork Section of Louisville Loop is Tomorrow

Metro Parks is one step closer to finalizing the Floyds Fork segment of the Louisville Loop. There’s a public meeting tomorrow to get feedback from the community.

When it’s completed, the Louisville Loop will be a 100-mile bike path circling the city. Right now, there are 23 miles completed—from downtown and along the Ohio River into southwest Louisville—and the other sections of the trail are in various phases of planning.

JCPS Committee Crafts School Board Orientation Plan

Jefferson County Public Schools’ three new board members-elect will begin orientation soon prior to taking their seat on the school board next January.

“There are several topics that jump out,” said JCPS board chair Diane Porter.

A tentative transition plan was sent last week to David Jones Jr. in District 2, Chuck Haddaway in District 4 and Chris Brady in District 7.

The three are expected to participate in meetings about the budget and board protocols prior to Jan. 14 when they take their seats.

Bus Accident Sends Five JCPS Students Hospital

The Courier-Journal reports that five Valley High School students were taken to Kosair Children's Hospital after being rear ended by a vehicle around 7:10 am Monday morning.

There were no serious injuries according to JCPS officials although the five students did complain of head pain, the C-J reported.

A total of 11 students were on the bus with no further injuries.

Father of Girls Lost in Tragic Christmas Fire Encourages Arts in Schools

The father of three girls killed last Christmas Eve in a Connecticut house fire is encouraging local schools to apply for grants though his new fund.

After last year’s accident Matthew Badger founded the Lily-Sarah-Grace Fund to support low-income schools with arts grant funding.

Badger is on a national road tour, driving a Winnebago, and speaking at schools that lack funding and could benefit from grants ranging from $100 to $5,000.

The Speed Art Museum has closed its doors for a$50 million renovation and expansion project, but that doesn’t mean the institution will go to sleep for the next three years. One community outreach initiative launches this month.
