Events like last weekend's CycLOUvia are great for cyclists, but what about people who commute on their bicycles every day?

I got an email from Craig Lee yesterday morning. He commutes (or used to commute) from Deer Park in the Highlands to Jeffersontown several times a week. Lee says:

In a town hall-style debate that saw the candidates constantly challenge each other on issues ranging from the economy to the handling of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney got up close and personal at times Tuesday night.

Louisville’s Downtown Development Corporation has been awarded a grant to pursue formal LEED designation for the city’s East Market—or NuLu—neighborhood.

LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design,” and the certification is usually given to buildings that incorporate various energy efficient and sustainable features. But there’s also a LEED neighborhood designation, and now the LDDC has been awarded $25,000 to pursue that certification.

Metro Parks transforms the amphitheater stage into Parkside Studio by closing off the large stage's usually invisible fourth wall, creating an intimate, indoor stage (for days so foul and fair alike). 

Few books have been more discussed this year than Hanna Rosin's, "The End of Men: And the Rise of Women." Through reams of data and cultural arguments, she argues that women have been eclipsing men in the workplace because they're more adaptable and communicative in a changing, information-based economy.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is running ads in support of controversial Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin in his bid to unseat Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.

For the past week, RandPAC has been targeting Senate Democrats for voting against Paul's proposal to cut foreign aid to Libya, Egypt and Pakistan. The blistering ads have been running in key Senate races in Ohio, West Virginia and Florida, but have been criticized by high-profiled Republicans such as Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina.

A Super PAC that is helping defend Democrats is Kentucky state House races has raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars. 

Kentucky Family Values is helping Democrats beat back the GOP’s attempt to take control of the House. And one month before the election, the group reported raising $236,000. It still has $190,000 cash on hand. 

Indiana and Kentucky are overhauling the body governing for the Ohio River Bridges Project and expect to approve new agreements Tuesday afternoon that will transfer power from the bi-state Bridges Authority in charge of overseeing the project, to a four-member Joint Board.

The bi-state authority was put in charge of creating a financial plan for the now $2.6 billion Ohio River Bridges Project, which includes a tolling agreement that has yet to be worked out.

City leaders plan to create a new registry to help the city better track vacant properties and ensure they're maintained.

The city has over 16,000 abandoned properties. In some neighborhoods, up to a third of the houses are vacant. A proposed ordinance would create a city registry to track foreclosed properties and levy fines on banks that are not following regulations. Whenever banks foreclose on a home, they'll be required to give the city notice and information on who is responsible for maintaining the property. 

“Generally, once the banks acknowledge that they are responsible for the properties they do a pretty good job of maintaining the properties. The ones where we have a lot of issues are when it’s in this no man’s land where we’re still fining and still citing a property owner who has already walked away from the property,” says Councilman Rick Blackwell, D-12, who is sponsoring the ordinance.
