Girls Vaccinated For HPV Not More Likely To Be Sexually Active

Giving the human papillomavirus vaccine to teenage girls doesn't increase the likelihood that they will be sexually active, according to a new study.

That may help put parents at ease; the notion of vaccinating 11- and 12-year-old girls for a sexually transmitted virus has made some uncomfortable, and is one reason why only a little more than half of teenage girls have had the vaccine.

Crime Novelist Teaches Writing Workshop

Acclaimed crime novelist Charlie ("Calumet City") Newton returns to Louisville tomorrow to teach a writing workshop at Second Story Books (2004 Highland Ave.).

Newton taught a similar workshop and gave a reading from his second novel, "Start Shooting" at Second Story back in June:

CycLOUvia Organizers Hope to Hold Event Again

The organizers of Louisville’s first-ever CycLOUvia say the event in the Highlands was a success, and they’d definitely like to do it again.

A two-mile stretch of Bardstown Road and Baxter Avenue was closed to vehicles Sunday to encourage walking and biking. Hundreds of people turned out.

Tennis Comedy Filmed in Louisville Premieres

An underdog sports comedy filmed in Louisville makes its Kentucky premiere this week. “2nd Serve” is a new comedy about a former tennis star, Owen "Game Set" Match, who gets fired from his ritzy country club gig and is forced to teach on the public courts with a ragtag group of has-beens at the worst tennis club in town. 

Call it “Dodgeball” for the Wimbledon set.

Wendell Berry Advocates for 50-Year Farm Bill at Local Conference

Wendell Berry.

Kentucky poet and farmer Wendell Berry advocated for a 50-Year farm bill at the 13th annual Healthy Food, Local Farms Conference this past weekend.

Farm bills are usually passed by Congress every five years. But Berry says a longer-term 50-year farm bill would be more beneficial to the environment.

LG&E to Shut Down Coal-Fired Cane Run Plant Eight Months Early

Louisville Gas and Electric announced today that the company's coal-fired Cane Run Power Plant will be shut down eight months earlier than planned.

The company announced plans to convert the power plant to natural gas last year, and construction on the new facility is going faster than expected. The coal-fired plant should be shut down by May 2015.

Confusion Over Future Liquor Sales Leads to Strange Partnerships

A recent ruling by a federal judge has turned Kentucky’s liquor sales environment into a state of confusion.

The judge struck down Kentucky laws that prohibit liquor sales in grocery stores and gas stations, calling it unconstitutional. He has since decided to place that ruling  on hold to let Kentucky lawmakers see if they can write a better law.

At the same time, a task force appointed by the governor is studying the same issue and begins public input meetings this week.

Dalai Lama to Speak at YUM Center

The Dalai Lama plans to bless Louisville's Drepung Gomang Institute on his three-day visit.

The Dalai Lama plans to visit Louisville next May and hold public talks on compassion.

It was announced the Dalai Lama would visit Louisville earlier this year to bless the city’s Tibetan Buddhist Center, called the Drepung Gomang  Institute. Now plans for his May 19-21 visit have been announced by institute officials and Mayor Greg Fischer.

The theme suits Fischer's commitments to compassion made last year, which asked residents to volunteer in preparation for the Kentucky Derby, said institute board member Will Lestrange.

PHOTOS: Louisville's First-Ever CycLOUvia

A two-mile stretch of road was closed to vehicles yesterday afternoon for Louisville's first CycLOUvia. The event was inspired by a similar one called Ciclovia in Bogota, Colombia, where streets are closed to traffic every Sunday to encourage walking and biking.

Young Ad Targets Obamacare

In the race for Indiana's Ninth Congressional District race, Republican incumbent Todd Young has released a TV ad attacking President Obama's health care overhaul.

The 30-second spot criticizes the Affordable Care Act as "just one more way that Washington is trying to control" residents lives. It shows a series of doors in doctor's offices slamming in the viewers face to signify a barrier between physicians and their patients with Young opening the door for residents.
