College Football: Cards Lose at Syracuse; IU Falls 62-14

The Louisville Cards were dealt their first loss of the college football season, falling 45-26 Saturday at Syrcause.

The Orange led 31-13 at halftime, and the Cards were unable to mount an effective rally in the second half. U of L is now 9-1 on the season and 4-1 in Big East Conference play with games remaining against Connecticut and Rutgers. The Cards have next Saturday off.

In Bloomington, Wisconsin routed Indiana 62-14, snapping the Hoosiers’ two-game winning streak. IU falls to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten Conference.

Two Dead After Shooting in Walmart Parking Lot

A man and a woman are dead after what appear to be related shootings that began at the Walmart located at 11901 Standiford Plaza Drive.

Louisville Metro Police responded to a call at 12:17 in the Walmart parking lot where a female victim was found unresponsive from an apparent gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokeswoman Carey Klain.

Witnesses provided a description of a male suspect and said he fled in the scene in a gray Nissan.

4.3-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Eastern Kentucky

WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting an earthquake has occurred in eastern Kentucky, but it rattled at least three other states.

The USGS website said the epicenter of the 4.3 magnitude earthquake on Saturday afternoon was about 10 miles west of Whitesburg. Residents in eastern Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee reported feeling the temblor.

Constables Report Encourages Lawmakers Seeking to Abolish Office

Kentucky lawmakers who advocate abolishing the office of constable are emboldened by a new report from the state justice cabinet calling for just that.

Constables have the same law enforcement powers as county sheriffs, but without the specific duties. Like sheriffs, the position is outlined in the constitution.

For years, lawmakers have tried to pass a constitutional amendment to end the office. The report said constables have little law enforcement purpose in Kentucky, accounting for .20 of recorded law enforcement in the state.

College Basketball: UK Squeaks Past Terps, IU Rolls Over Bryant

Kyle Wiltjer scored 19 points and Jarrod Polston provided a career-best ten points off the bench to lead the Kentucky Wildcats to a 72-69 win over Maryland in their regular season opener at the Barclays Center Friday night in Brooklyn, New York.

The third-ranked Wildcats led by as many as 15 points early in the second half, but the Terps came back and had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer.

UK faces number eight Duke Tuesday in Atlanta.

The top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers defeated Bryant 97-54.

'Voices Inside' Play Series Turns Prisoners into Playwrights

One of the plays in Actors Theatre Apprentice Company's current reading series centers on the victim of a crime, recounting the experience from her point of view. The remarkable thing is, it was written by the crime's perpetrator. "Voices Inside: A Prison Play Series" -- the apprentice company's current creation, is a series of 10-minute plays written by inmates at Northpoint Training Center, a medium-security prison in Burgin, Ky.

Train Derailment: Hydrogen Fluoride Cars to be Off-Loaded Tuesday

The off-loading for cars carrying dangerous chemicals at the train derailment site in southwestern Jefferson County will begin Tuesday morning, but officials are not scheduling an evacuation or shelter-in-place order, the city said.

But Dixie Highway will again close -- from the Salt River bridge to Ky. 44 starting at 6 a.m. Tuesday. 

Though no evacuation or shelter order are planned, authorities cautioned that prevailing winds may require them to be issued when the chemicals are transferred.
