Another Closed Boys and Girls Club Reopens

After closing its doors last year, the Parkland Boys and Girls Club will hold its grand reopening Monday. Parkland and three other local Boys and Girls Clubs operated by the Salvation Army were closed last year due to financial cuts. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana, which also operates clubs in the area, reopened the closed Newberg club earlier this year and at the time president Jennifer Helgeson said the organization would also try to reopen the Parkland club. Helgeson said the annual cost to operate a single club is around $300,000 and she said the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana hasn't raised that amount for the Parkland club yet. But there’s little risk in opening the club because the need for services in the area is so high, she said. “When we looked at Parkland it was very specific and strategic. Jefferson County Public Schools, Metro United Way, along with the city helped to show numbers for us," said Helgeson. The organization looked at the amount of after school services provided in the Parkland area as well as the number of "low-income" students. “And it was very apparent that Parkland was the club that we needed to move into and start providing services," she said. Helgeson said that the fundraising efforts remain strong and that she's confident the club will reach its goal to sustain services. She said while reopening the two remaining closed clubs isn’t an immediate goal, the organization does have long-term plans that could potentially expand to another operation.
