A report from the Kentucky auditor says the Kenton County School District spent excessive amounts of money on out-of-state travel and was lax in monitoring its finances.
Auditor Adam Edelen says the district’s food services department has spent more than $116,000 on out-of-state travel since 2007.
Edelen’s report says 46 employees attended a conference in Las Vegas in 2009 and 27 employees attended a conference last year in Nashville. The two trips cost the district $59,000. The Kenton County Board of Education has acknowledged that it is unnecessary to send that many employees to a conference. School officials say they were not aware of many of the out-of-state trips.
Edelen says the district has agreed to implement his recommendations to strengthen policies and oversight of financial activities.
The audit was spurred by citizen concerns about travel and procurement in the district.
