Barbara Bichelmeyer to be Interim Chancellor of IU Southeast

Kip May

The next leader of Indiana University Southeast is an IU system administrator whose job has included working with regional campuses.Barbara Bichelmeyer (pronouced Bickle-myer) will on July 1 replace IU Southeast Chancellor Sandra Patterson-Randles, who is retiring after an 11 period period that saw enrollment growth and the erection of dorms on the New Albany campus.Bichelmeyer will lead IU Southeast as interim chancellor for only the 2013-14 academic year. She plans to return next year to her current job—the IU system's associate vice president for university academic policy and planning and director of its Office of Online Education. She's also a faculty member at IU's flagship Bloomington campus. She tells WFPL that she plans to use her year in New Albany as a learning experience to take back to her administrative role in the IU system, which includes working to improve collaboration within the IU system among regional campuses in South Bend, Kokomo and other Indiana communities.“It’s a great way for me to continue the important work that I think we’ve all been doing around elevating the profile and the recognition of the importance of the regional campuses across the state, and again particularly in southern Indiana," Bichelmeyer says."And so it helps me to be able to get a different perspective of the work we’ve already been doing at Indiana University, and hopefully I’ll have some value added to the leadership team to work with them to facilitate and state their vision for what they want Southeast to be.”Meanwhile, IU Southeast is forming a search committee to find a permanent chancellor.Bichelmeyer says she wants to help in that process, too. She says she wants to help IU Southeast is to "help them work together, to articulate better, what they want to tell that new chancellor about what their vision is for the future and to help them clarify how they want to work and what mission they want to take on in the southern Indiana community.“And so I’m looking forward to helping to continue to grow the community relationships and the connections with the larger university in the course of the year, and there’s a great leadership team in place there and I’m looking forward to working with them," she added.Bichelmeyer joined IU as an assistant processor in the Bloomington campus' School of Education. She's been in her current associate vice president role since 2009.IU Southeast has about 7,000 students.
