Beshear Blends Old and New Legislative Priorities in 2013

Gov. Steve Beshear is blending a mix of old and new when it comes to his legislative priorities in 2013. With the 2013 session’s first days only weeks away, Beshear is ready to push some old initiatives while helping lawmakers solve pressing issues like pensions.Beshear says he will once again try to find enough votes to pass expanded gambling legislation in 2013. And he wants to pass the so-called dropout bill as well.In addition to those old reforms, Beshear says he also wants to work with lawmakers to help shore up the struggling state pensions and on tax reform.“So those are big issues that we need to at least start discussing during the short session. How far we get on them I don’t know. But I believe the House and Senate leadership are all on board with starting to talk about those big issues,” he says.Beshear also wants to figure out more funding for education, specifically in areas like textbooks.“I want to pass the graduation bill if we can, very important to me, so there’s a number of issues like that that we’ll need to be addressing this year,” he says.Lawmakers have yet to pass either a gambling bill or a bill to raise the dropout age to 18 since Beshear was first elected in 2007. The 2013 session starts  Jan. 8.
