The Breeders’ Cup is returning to Kentucky for the first time since 2011—but this time the races won’t be in Louisville.
Lexington’s Keeneland Race Course next year will host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time, the Lexington-based racing championship series announced Tuesday.
The races will be run Oct. 30 and 31, 2015.
The thoroughbred racing championships have been run at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, the last three seasons.
The 2016 Breeders’ Cup will return to Santa Anita Park, and then to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in San Diego—also for the first time—in 2017.
Churchill Downs had 105,820 attendees when it last hosted the Breeders’ Cup in 2011. Churchill has hosted the event a record eight times, but Santa Anita will surpass the number in 2016.
