Two key players from the Louisville Cardinals’ men’s national championship team will dress to play in Tuesday’s game against Hofsta.
Junior forward Chane Behanan will return from a suspension for violating team and universities rules.
Senior forward Luke Hancock—the Most Outstanding Player from the 2013 Final Four—missed the Cardinals’ season opener on Saturday because of an Achilles injury.
Pitino announced Monday that both players would dress for Tuesday’s game at the KFC Yum Center. He did not say either would get into the game.
When he announced Behanan’s suspension, men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino said the player’s return to the Cardinals was possible but not “probable.”
“I just didn’t think he could do what we put forward,” Pitino said on Monday. “Physically, mentally, emotionally—I just didn’t think he could do anything. Getting himself up early in the morning at 6:15 and being early, and getting himself early to everything we put him through, from a community service standpoint to everything. I didn’t think he could do it.”
Pitino has not revealed the exact reason for Behanan’s suspension. He said he wanted Behanan to go 30 “straight days of doing the right thing,” but Behanan violated those terms in the first two. But he’s now followed the guidelines for 30 days and is back on the squad.
Pitino added that Behanan will have to meet extra requirements for the whole year.
As for playing on Tuesday: “Both guys are in great shape. Chane hasn’t been with the team for 33 days, but the regimen that he went through he’s probably in better shape than if he was with the team, from a conditioning standpoint,” Pitino said.
