Churchill Downs and Kentucky Downs Jostling Over Race Dates

Churchill Downs and Kentucky Downs are still jockeying over racing dates, and state horse racing regulators say they'll step in to settle the dispute if the tracks can't reach agreement.The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission's executive director, John T. Ward, met privately Tuesday with top executives of both tracks.The track executives couldn't reach a deal in time for a racing commission panel to propose racing dates for September 2015. The commission must award 2015 racing dates by Nov. 1 under state law.Churchill has had 12 days of September racing the last two years, overlapping some days with Kentucky Downs in Franklin.Churchill executives have raised concerns about the viability of the Louisville track's September racing schedule if the two tracks continue to run against one another.
