Most of the immediate dangers caused by heavy rains and flooding Friday have abated.
Jefferson County got more than six inches of rain on Thursday night and into Friday, which caused road closures and emergency evacuations throughout the county.
More than 200 people were rescued by boat from buildings and cars, and 143 people were removed from the Guardian Apartments in Newburg. And over the weekend, Governor Steve Beshear declared a statewide emergency to enable local governments to access state resources, like the National Guard.
Now, all of Jefferson County’s roads that were closed because of high water are open. Residents displaced by flooding have been at the Red Cross shelter at Broadbent Arena, and that shelter will remain open until Thursday.
Metro Public Works is accepting flood debris from county residents at the Metro Waste Reduction Center, which is usually closed on Mondays. The service is free for country residents who have two items proving their residency. The Waste Reduction Center is at 636 Meriwether Avenue, and it’s open until 5 p.m. every day this week.
