Community Foundation Gives $20,000 to Boys and Girls Clubs Campaign

The Community Foundation of Louisville is donating $20,000 to help reopen the three Salvation Army Boys and Girls Clubs that closed last week.It’s the third large donation since Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana announced its two month, $500,000 goal to re-open the Salvation Army's clubs.The Salvation Army closed its four clubs last week citing financial problems. Kentuckiana is now trying to figure out how it can reopen three of them. President Jennifer Helgeson says money is key.LG&E and Kroger have both donated $50,000 to the cause.Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana is also preparing to offer transportation from the Salvation Army’s closed Portland and Parkland clubs to its Shawnee club beginning next week. President Jennifer Helgeson says she hopes to re-open Salvation Army’s Newburg club as soon as possible.Helgeson says it costs around $300,000 to operate just one club. Metro United Way previously funded both the Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kentuckiana. Officials for the United Way say they’ll continue all funding if Kentuckiana assumes responsibility.Individual donations had reached $2,100 by late afternoon on Wednesday.
