Court Allows Extra Time for 12 Absentee Ballots Cast in Kentucky's Primary

The Kentucky secretary of state's office says the return deadline for a dozen military and overseas ballots has been extended by 11 days.

A statement from Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes says her office and the Board of Elections obtained a court order on Monday extending the deadline.

That action came after the agencies were informed of a problem with an outside vendor that led to a delay in those voters getting absentee ballots. The agencies argued that due to the delay, it would be unlikely that clerks would receive their ballots by 6 p.m. on May 19.

The court ruled that the ballots can be counted as long as they are postmarked by 6 p.m. on May 19 and arrive within 11 days of the election.
