CycLOUvia Unveils New Route Through Germantown, Shelby Park And Schnitzelburg

Louisville’s CycLOUvia is coming to a new neighborhood in August.

The city’s open streets program -- where roads are shut down to vehicle traffic and people are encouraged to take to the streets on feet and pedals -- will hold its first event at Three Points. That's the name given to the intersection of Germantown, Shelby Park and Schnitzelburg.

CycLOUvia was started in 2012 as a part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown initiative and is modeled after a similar idea called Ciclovía that began in Bogotá, Colombia. The event aims to get Louisvillians out into the sun to appreciate the architecture, interact with local markets, open up the streets, and foster a deeper connection with the city’s neighborhoods and communities.

Organizers say it’s a chance to take it slow on streets usually noisy with cars and just listen to the bustle of the crowds and the clicking wheels of pennyfarthing bicycle enthusiasts.

CycLOUvia in Three Points will be on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 2 to 6 p.m., and is free to the public.
