Dalai Lama to Speak at YUM Center

The Dalai Lama plans to visit Louisville next May and hold public talks on compassion. It was announced the Dalai Lama would visit Louisville earlier this year to bless the city’s Tibetan Buddhist Center, called the Drepung Gomang Institute. Now plans for his May 19-21 visit have been announced by institute officials and Mayor Greg Fischer. The theme suits Fischer's commitments to compassion made last year, which asked residents to volunteer in preparation for the Kentucky Derby, said institute board member Will Lestrange.“The Dalai Lama is going to help focus on how we can become a more compassionate society, which fits very neatly in with the work Mayor Fischer has been doing," said Lestrange.Lestrange said the Dalai Lama will host a series of talks on compassion at the KFC Yum Center. On May 19, he plans to address a crowd at the KFC YUM Center that could draw a crowd near 16,000. The Dalai Lama is a Nobel Piece Prize and Congressional Medal of Honor winner and has been a spokesman for non-violent, peaceful resolution around the world. On May 20, he'll give a two-part public Buddhist teaching in the morning and afternoon at the YUM Center. Both events are open to all.On May 21, he'll address a group of students at the Kentucky Center. The events are also expected to include music, arts and cultural programing. Furtehr, the Festival of Faiths, which is normally held in November, will be moved up to May next year, said Lestrange.Tickets for the YUM Center events will be on sale later this year. For more information visit dalailamalouisville.org.
