District 2 School Board Candidate Jones Jr. Responds to Conflicts of Interest Claims

Jefferson County Board of Education District 2 candidate David Jones Jr. says his opponent’s complaints that invalidate his candidacy are misleading.A complaint was filed this week by candidate Phil Haming asking the Office of Education Accountability to investigate a possible conflict of interest with Jones’ candidacy.Jones has been on the Humana board since 1993 (he has served as chairman) and still owns stock in the company. He is also founder of Chrysalis Ventures, which helps companies like HealthTeacher, which recently received a grant to implement the program in JCPS schools. But those decisions weren’t made by the board, said Jones.“It’s a ridiculous charge. I mean the school board didn’t vote on these things so I’m confident that I will be able to serve,” he said.In his letter to the Office of Education Accountability, Haming cites state law KRS 160.180, which says "No person shall be eligible to membership on a board of education (g) Who, at the time of his election, is directly or indirectly interested in the sale to the board of books, stationary, or any other property, materials, supplies, equipment, or services for which school funds are expended."But Haming further said the Office of Education Accountability will only investigate claims against current board members and he would have to file a lawsuit in court to proceed resolve the claims prior to the Nov. 6 election.Haming told he doesn’t have the time or the money to follow up.Jones told the media Friday afternoon it is appropriate raise the question about possible conflicts of interest with any candidate, but that his name is clear.“I raised them myself early on when I first started thinking about this, would there be a problem. We did our due diligence, I checked, I did my homework and the answer is there is no preclusion to going on the board,” he said. There are four candidates vying for Steve Imhoff’s District 2 seat. The other two candidates are George Tolhurst and Elizabeth Berfield.
