Early Morning Storm Causes Widespread Power Outages

Updated: More than 3,000 Louisville Gas & Electric customers in Jefferson County were without power early Wednesday morning after a thunderstorm pass through the Louisville area, prompting a tornado warning that expired at 4:55 a.m.A few trees were reported toppled in the Pleasure Ridge Park area, said a supervisor for MetroSafe, citing preliminary reports.Jefferson County Public Schoolswere open and runningon a regular schedule. New Albany-Floyd County schools, Clarksville Community schools, Greater Clark schools and West Clark schools were on two-hours delays.Power outages were spread throughout the Louisville area at 5 a.m., but the most in Louisville were found in northeastern Jefferson County near the Watterson Expressway, according to LG&E. About 2,500 LG&E customers were without service near Hillview in Bullitt County. At the same time, about 120 Duke Energy customers were without service in Floyd County.Update 6:30 a.m.: LG&E had restored electrical service to many of the affected customers. Jefferson County had about 1,300 customers without service and Bullitt County had about 40. But Duke reported about 170 customers without service in Floyd County.Update 7:58 a.m.: About 1,100 LG&E customers in Jefferson County, 200 in Oldham County and 38 in Bullitt County were without power. Duke Energy had 160 customers without service in Floyd County.Jefferson and surrounding counties were under a wind advisory until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Earlier, Jefferson and surround Kentucky counties were under a tornado watch until noon Wednesday, but the weather service canceled it. Update 10 a.m.: About 500 Jefferson County residents were without electrical service, about 200 in Oldham County and 38 in Bullitt County, according to LG&E. Outages were spread throughout Jefferson, mostly in western Bullitt and along Interstate 71 in Oldham. Thirty-three Duke customers were without energy in Clark County in Indiana, and 45 in Floyd, accordign to Duke.Louisville is forecast to see thunderstorms and showers before 11 a.m. and then showers, and maybe storms, until 2 p.m., the National Weather Service said. Temperatures will drop in Louisville through the day—it was at 58 at 5:30 a.m., but expected to be 51 by 5 p.m.
