Kentucky Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says he disagrees with the National Rifle Association’s aggressive response to the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.

NRA officials made their first formal comments Friday following last week’s school shooting that left 26 dead.During the no-questions press conference, officials listed movies and video games they believe contribute to school violence. Officials called on a task force to create a model program that would include training and arming guards who could protect school children.(Click here to read the transcript via WHNT)But, those who disagree with the NRA point to the 1999 shootings at Columbine, where an armed guard was on duty but still could not prevent 13 deaths. In speaking with WFPL, Holliday said, “I think we need a more holistic approach,” Holliday said. “I think we need to look at gun control. I think we need to look at mental health. I think we need to look at violence in our media.”Holliday said better gun control and mental health support should both be considered by lawmakers.  He also disagrees with a Michigan law vetoed this week that would have allowed licensed persons to carry concealed weapons in schools and other public places.
