Eve Theatre Company's 'Kin' Examines The Family We Choose

Eve Theatre Company

In Eve Theatre Company’s upcoming play, audiences will see a new take on the truism “Friends are the family we choose.”

“Kin,” written by Bathsheba Doran, introduces Anna, a Texan Ivy League poetry scholar, and Sean, an Irish personal trainer, who hardly seem destined for one another. But as their web of family and friends crosses distances both psychological and geographical, an unlikely new family is forged.

Arranged as a series of humorous and revealing vignettes, “Kin” offers insight into the details of the young couple’s emerging relationship through the eyes of their closest friends and relatives.

Even though many of the characters never meet, and the couple is rarely seen together, the play offers a thoughtful and satisfying emotional journey that demonstrates how each individual’s experience resonates with others.

Susan McNeese Lynch is a co-founder of Eve Theatre Company. She says they focus on telling women’s stories -- which makes “Kin” an obvious choice to perform given how women are involved in family relationships.

“We tend to be the catalyst of bringing people together,” Lynch says. “We tend to be the ones keeping the, quote, ‘home fires burning,’ if you will.”

She says Durand -- who's written for TV shows like “Boardwalk Empire” and “Smash” -- has an immersive writing style. In the script, Lynch says there were notes towards creating lush landscapes for each scene. But since the company is performing in the MeX, the Kentucky Center’s black box theater, Lynch says they had to get creative.

“They’re actually going to see not so much set pieces or a lot of constructed set -- that’s why a black box is so good for this,” she says. “It’s going to be a lot more about the lighting and the audio. We’re doing a lot of interesting things with the audio.”

Eve’s production is directed by Gilmer McCormick Reinhardt and features: Kim Butterweck, Sean Childress, Jacob Cooper, Heather Hensley, Susan McNeese Lynch, Phil Lynch, Diane Stretz-Thurmond, Leila Toba and Ian Weber.

“Kin” runs Nov. 3 through 13. More information is available here.
