Event to Highlight Connections Between Climate Change, Civil Rights

Religious and environmental groups in Louisville are coming together to host a talk on civil rights and climate change this week.Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light is hosting an event on Thursday to discuss the connections between race, faith and climate change. The lecture is in conjunction with the NAACP’s Climate Justice Initiative, which addresses pollution and climate change as environmental inequality that’s borne disproportionately by minority groups.Aaron Tornes of Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light is one of the event’s organizers.“The NAACP has a climate justice initiative, and we agree with them that global warming is one of the most important civil rights issues of our time,” he said. “We need to right the injustices that are visited upon us through the water we drink, the land on which we live and by the very air we breathe.”Reverend Gerald Durley of Atlanta will speak about encouraging African American congregations to mobilize around environmental and climate change issues, much as they fought for civil rights issues in the 1960s.The event is Thursday at 6:30 at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage.
