Funds continue to be acquired for a campaign to expand and update the Falls of the Ohio Interpretive Center.
The Falls of the Ohio Foundation recently completed a $500,000 challenge grant offered by the James Graham Brown Foundation. In order to be eligible for the grant, the park’s Foundation was required to raise $1 million.
The challenge grant was presented in April and the park foundation was able to generate more than $1.4 million since then.
In addition to the recent challenge grant, the James Graham Brown Foundation in 2009 gave just more than $500,000 to the campaign.
Grants and fundraising efforts have allowed the Falls of the Ohio Foundation to reach its goal of generating $5.5 million for the “Crossroads Campaign,” said Diane Swank, president of the Falls of the Ohio Foundation.
Upon completion of the “Crossroads Campaign,” visitors to the Falls of the Ohio will be treated to updated exhibits and a modernized Interpretive Center, Swank said.
She said the museum and updated exhibits will be a high-tech way to tell the story of the rich history of the region.
Mason Rummel, president of the James Graham Brown Foundation, said supporting the expansion of the historical park is important to maintaining some of the community’s cultural heritage.
“Louisville exists because of those falls right there,” she said. “It’s a quality of life issue to have these kinds of attractions and cultural and interpretive centers available to the public.”
Annually, 500,000 people visit the park, Swank said. Of those visitors, 60 percent come from Kentucky.
New exhibits are scheduled to be completed by spring 2015. The Interpretive Center will close for the renovations in the fall of 2014.
Louisville based design firm Solid Light will be completing the renovations.
