First Lady Michelle Obama will come to Eastern Kentucky University in May to participate in the spring commencement ceremony.

EKU President Doug Whitlock says his office got a call from a member of the First Lady’s staff almost a week ago. Eastern is receiving national attention for the help it gives veterans working to further their education.

Michael Benson will be the next president of Eastern Kentucky University.

Benson, currently head of Southern Utah University, was chosen Friday after a closed-door session of the EKU Board of Regents.

Benson takes over an institution with shrinking enrollment, that’s undergone dramatic budget cuts and staff reductions.

Board of Regents Chairman Craig Turner says the new president can now be the good cop and help heal staff morale.

EKU's Rugby Team Suspended During Hazing Investigation

Eastern Kentucky University officials have suspended the school’s club rugby team following hazing allegations.

Associate Vice President of Student Affairs Mike Reagle says the suspension means more than not playing games. The student-run team cannot meet, practice, have parties or do anything together as a group. Reagle said the prohibition is for the safety of team members.

The suspension came on Tuesday after officials received reports of hazing, the details of which have not been publicly disclosed.

The presidential search committee for Eastern Kentucky University has been established.

Current President Doug Whitlock will retire next summer. Former State Senator and Richmond City Manager Ed Worley will serve on the eleven-member committee. He says it's important to find a president who is comfortable with business and academia.
