Freedom Award en Longtime Activist Suzy Post to Get Metro Louisville's 2014 Freedom Award <p>Longtime Louisville activist Suzy Post will receive Metro Louisville's 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award.</p><p>Post has a long history of social activism in Louisville. She was president of what is now the ACLU of Kentucky and later the founding president of the Metropolitan Housing Coalition.&nbsp;<span style="line-height: 1.5;">She's also the last surviving plaintiff in the </span>1970s<span style="line-height: 1.5;"> lawsuit that forced the city's public schools to desegregate, the city said.</span></p> Mon, 13 Jan 2014 17:40:30 +0000 Joseph Lord 8221 at Mayor Greg Fischer to Present Ishmon Burks With Freedom Award <p>Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has chosen former Kentucky Secretary of Justice Ishmon Burks to be the 2013 recipient of the city’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award.</p><p>Burks is a retired army colonel who also served as the first African-American commissioner of the Kentucky State Police. In 2011, he<a href=""> served as interim chief of the Louisville Metro Police Department</a> and as Fischer’s chief of public safety.</p><p>Burks says he is humbled by the mayor’s choice, and accepts the Freedom Award with a sense of gratitude.</p><p>"I wasn’t quite sure how to take it, but he said ‘I think you’re the man’ and I said mayor if you think so it’s fine with me.
