A new lobbying group founded by <a href="http://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2013/04/27/new-conservative-lobbying-push-for-gay-marriage">prominent conservative donor Paul Singer is pushing for gay marriage legislation</a> as more Republicans join the cause to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.</p><p>Even two prominent Kentucky <a href="http://fatlip.leoweekly.com/2013/04/09/adam-edelen-joins-jerry-abramson-in-the-marriage-equality-club/">Democrats—Auditor Adam Edelen and Lt. Gov. Bailey 5130 at http://wfpl.org Congressman Thomas Massie Proposes Bipartisan Bill to Ease Federal Sentencing Laws Poll: 65 Percent of Kentuckians Oppose Same-Sex Marriage http://wfpl.org/post/poll-65-percent-kentuckians-oppose-same-sex-marriage <p>A survey conducted by <a href="http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2013/04/kentucky-miscellany.html">Public Policy Polling shows Kentucky voters still overwhelmingly oppose same-sex marriage</a> despite national trends.</p><p>The poll was taken in early April, and it finds 65 percent think it should remain illegal and only 27 percent support marriage equality for gay, lesbian and transgendered couples.</p><p>That is in stark contrast to national figures that indicate <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/53-percent-americans-support-gay-marriage-poll-finds-144319219--politics.html">marriage equality is gaining popularity across the country</a> and for the first time hovers well over 50 percent. A number of Republican and Democratic senators have come out for marriage equality in recent weeks such as Democrat Joe Donnelly of Indiana and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio.</p><p>But in Kentucky the idea faces solid opposition regardless of political party. According to PPP, 54 percent of Democratic voters in the state also oppose gay marriage while only 37 percent support it.</p><p>The Rev. Maurice Blanchard of Louisville says LGBT residents are getting tired of defending their relationships, adding Kentucky is falling behind the times.</p><p>"Those poll shows how disconnected some people are in this state to what’s happening on a larger sense. Bailey 3056 at http://wfpl.org Kentucky Secretary of State Forming Advisory Group to Explore Early Voting State Lawmaker Defends John Yarmuth from Mitch McConnell Biographer http://wfpl.org/post/state-lawmaker-defends-john-yarmuth-mitch-mcconnell-biographer <p>Newly elected state Senator Morgan McGarvey, D-Louisville, lashes out a Senate Republican Mitch McConnell in a <em>Courier-Journal </em>editorial, saying the GOP leader is only interested in attaining more power.</p><p>McGarvey was defending Democratic Congressman John Yarmuth from McConnell biographer John David Dyche, who <a href="http://wfpl.org/post/columnist-rips-yarmuth-over-mcconnell-comments">penned a stinging article comparing to a "yapping toy poodle"</a> among other things. The Dyche article was in response to <a href="http://wfpl.org/post/john-yarmuth-now-sole-democrat-state-delegation-takes-aim-mitch-mcconnell">Yarmuth's cheerleading for a challenge to McConnell</a> in 2014.</p><p>What's interesting about McGarvey's piece is that it acknowledges the origins of the Yarmuth-McConnell divide. Bailey 2767 at http://wfpl.org Fairness Law to be Proposed in Elizabethtown, Richmond http://wfpl.org/post/fairness-law-be-proposed-elizabethtown-richmond <p>Joined by a coalition of Kentucky gay rights leaders, residents in Elizabethtown and Richmond are pressuring lawmakers to enact fairness laws in their cities.</p><p>The effort is part of a larger grassroots movement across the state to get such legislation passed in other cities such as Shelbyville, Bowling Green and Berea. Both ordinances would prohibit discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations based on a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.</p><p>In Kentucky, only the cities of Covington, Lexington and Louisville have a fairness legislation.</p><p>Louisville Fairness Campaign Chris Hartman says many residents in rural areas of the state don’t know that discrimination against LGBT citizens is still permitted.</p><p>"I think that there’s an assumption that these protections already exist or they don’t even know that they are necessary.
