Forecastle Fest: Here Are Some Bands to Catch on Friday

David McClister

Forecastle Festival 2014 kicks off this afternoon. With dozens of performers slated, who besides headliners Outkast, Beck and Jack White should you catch?WFPL arts reporter Erin Keane and Sean Cannon, a DJ from our sister station WFPK, have some ideas. We'll roll out daily picks each morning. Here are suggestions for Friday:Old Baby (WFPK Port Stage, 1:45 p.m.)Here’s how I once described Old Baby’s sound: “It’s like a spaghetti western about cowboys gnawing on peyote and sipping laudanum while camping in the desert.” The band might not have its usual video projection since the show is in the afternoon, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be any less engaging. – SeanBlack Lips (Boom Stage, 2:15 p.m.)The Black Lips used to be known for their decidedly not safe for work live show antics. The Atlanta indie rockers have toned it down on that front, but the stage show is still as frenetic as ever. – SeanSt. Lucia (Ocean Stage, 4:45 p.m.)The lush electro-pop layers of boy genius Jean-Philip Grobler and Co. are made for summer late afternoons. This one’s a make-out party if you’re looking. – ErinWillie Watson (WFPK Port Stage, 5 p.m.)If the old timey component of Old Crow Medicine Show’s sound is what appeals to you (particularly in their earlier work), then former member Willie Watson is a must-see. – SeanSt. Paul and the Broken Bones(Late night show, Headliners Music Hall, 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning, tickets separate)If you can stay awake after a full day of Forecastling, these guys are a fitting end to a wild night. They have Stax-level soul, a wicked horn section, and are pure Alabama insanity on stage. – ErinCatch Sean and Erin discussing Forecastle on Byline at 1 p.m. today on 89.3 FM.You can find a full Forecastle schedule and more information here. Stay tuned tomorrow for photos and a review of Friday's happenings—plus more suggestions for bands to catch. And follow WFPL and WFPK on Twitter ( here and here) for on-the-spot updates.
