Former U of L Employee Pleads Guilty to Stealing $2.8 Million

A former University of Louisville employee has pleaded guilty to stealing $2.8 million during his tenure at the school through thefts and embezzlement.

Perry Chadwick Vaughn, from Sellersburg, Ind., was a former accountant and the director of the university’s Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine. He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to a seven-count federal indictment, including charges of theft, bribery, mail fraud, and filing false income tax returns, according to a media release.

Vaughn would have faced up to 55 years in prison had he been found guilty at trial. He's expected to get a reduced sentence under the agreement, and must pay restitution.

Formal sentencing will be held in March.

Vaughn is just one of several U of L employees who have been accused in recent years of stealing from the school.

Earlier this year, an independent audit recommended U of L improve its financial oversight. Officials say the school has already taken some action on the recommendations, including the hiring of a combined Chief Financial and Operations Officer.
