Gov. Steve Beshear Elected Chair of the Southern Regional Education Board

Gov. Steve Beshear has been elected chairman of the non-partisan Southern Regional Education Board, which aims to keep its member states focused on accountability and student achievement across the entire education pipeline.

Beshear succeeds Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, whose focus last year was on workforce readiness, an SREB spokeswoman says. Further, Beshear's focus will likely be on career and technical education, she says. The following is an excerpt from a release sent out by SREB: In 2011, Beshear was named America’s Greatest Education Governor by the National Education Association. He has challenged Kentucky’s school districts to adopt a new graduation age policy to keep potential dropouts engaged in school until age 18. He also merged the state’s career and technical education systems to place academic emphasis on career skills and better prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The SREB was formed in 1948 by governors and legislators. It focuses on the entire education pipeline and focuses on long-term change. The SREB holds one annual meeting with various commissions formed by the 80-member board meeting separately. Recently, SREB formed commissions on community colleges and middle grades.
