'Great American Sex Play' Explores Sexuality, Common Ground

Louisville Repertory Company closes its 20th season this week with a titillating revival. Louisville playwright Brian Walker’s “Great American Sex Play,” which premiered in 2006 with Walker’s own Finnigan Productions, opens in the Kentucky Center’s MeX Theatre Thursday. The new production features a refreshed, streamlined script and an all-new cast.“Great American Sex Play” is a comedy about six self-described “sexual deviants” who get more than they bargained for when they sign up for a laboratory sex study that ends up presenting them with challenges they didn’t anticipate. As the name suggests, “Great American Sex Play” is for mature audiences only.“It’s really dirty,” Walker says with a laugh. “There are some beautiful people in it and a lot of them will be exposing various parts of themselves. The dialogue is pretty raunchy. They’re in there talking about sex, they’re talking about their own sexualities, they’re having them picked apart. There are a lot of conversations that could make people blush, for sure.”But Walker says the nudity, sexual situations and language help illustrate how, at the end of the day, human sexuality is not as divisive as it might appear on the surface. With differences in human sexuality at the foreground of political battlegrounds like marriage equality, Walker says his play explores the common ground.“I think more and more people, and it’s happened just since I’ve become an adult, more and more people are sort of taking on that world view,” he says.  “My only hope for the play is maybe people that don’t have much of an understanding of other sexualities can come in and come away from it saying, well, okay, at the end of the day we all want and need the same things.”“Great American Sex Play” runs through May 26.
