Greater Louisville Arts Seeks More Diversity In Master Plan

Creative Commons

Last week, Greater Louisville Arts (GLA) -- a committee made up of local arts leaders -- released their draft of the Louisville Master Plan for the Arts. The goal of the project is to take stock of the city’s cultural assets and establish plans for improvement.

The draft was the result of extensive community surveys and meetings, but due to what it said is a lack of diversity in respondents, the Master Plan steering committee made the decision to extend the survey window until Aug. 8.

I talked with Alison Huff, a member of the GLA steering committee, to find out where the process stands and how the new data would be used.

Listen to our conversation in the audio player above.

Alison Huff on needing more diversity in the data and extending survey response time:

"If this is going to be a true community-wide plan, then we feel really strongly that we need to have the voices of our entire community represented. And that's the Greater Louisville area, so, the surrounding counties, too. We need urban voices and rural voices. We need East End voices and West End Voices and South End voices and Southern Indiana voices. And we just don’t feel like we have that critical mass yet."

On how the new survey data will be used:

Those responses will get integrated into that current draft of the community engagement report. We will see how that changes the information, how that changes the priorities that we have from the community moving forward. The next steps will have -- after those surveys close August 8th -- then September will be spent doing a gap analysis and doing a cultural asset inventory report, in order to get to a place where we are doing strategy development and a vision summit.
