Green Roof Unveiled on Housing Authority Building

One of the Louisville Metro Housing Authority’s administrative buildings is the city’s newest recipient of a green roof. There are more than 1,200 plants covering the nearly 17,000 square foot roof on top of the building on Vine Street.Housing Authority Director Tim Barry says a green roof was a natural choice for the building.“Well we needed a roof replacement anyway,” he said. “The one that was on there was an old tar roof that had outlived its usefulness, so it was time to replace it and we opted for a green roof because it has a much longer lifespan than a conventional roof. And it also has significant energy savings.”The roof will help cool the building in the summer and retain heat in the winter. The vegetation will also absorb rainwater and reduce runoff. Green roofs can also help reduce urban heat island effects, which have worsened in Louisville in recent years. The total cost was about five and a half dollars less a square foot than a conventional roof would have been.
