As Ground is Broken, River Fields Continues Bridges Fight

Officials from Kentucky, Indiana and the federal government are celebrating what they call the start of construction on the long-planned Ohio River Bridges Project. But a preservation group will continue its fight against a portion of the plan.Ground was broken today on a road extension in Indiana that will eventually be part of the interchange around an East End Bridge. The preservation group River Fields and the National Trust for Historic Preservation have opposed the East End Bridge Plan, and they filed suit three years ago arguing that the federal government didn't practice due diligence in preparing environmental impact statements.But the legal fight will move forward, despite the start of the construction.“It's just a ceremonial groundbreaking and it doesn't affect the legal process one way or the other. The legal process and the PR process are completely different," says River Fields Board President Lee Cory.Kentucky and Indiana are sharing responsibilities for the $2.6 billion bridges project. Indiana is responsible for building the East End Bridge while the commonwealth will finance and build a new downtown span and reconfigure Spaghetti Junction.River Fields has until September 5th to amend its complaint in the case
