Heavy Rains Cause Flooding, Evacuations, Road Closures in Louisville

Flooding caused by heavy rains overnight across the Louisville area has led to numerous road closures and some evacuations. Most of the evacuations occurred in the Whispering Hill, Guardian Court, Rockliff and Peabody areas of southeastern Louisville, MetroSafe says.A Red Cross shelter has been set up for the evacuees at Atherton High School. Overnight, Louisville Fire & Rescue had 12 rescue runs and 250 assist runs because of the rain, MetroSafe says.Authorities caution against driving vehicles onto roadways covered in water. Here's more from MetroSafe:

With almost six inches of rain over the last 24 hours there were many evacuations and rescues from the flooding.  Fire and Rescue units report 250 assists (temporary assistance from one place to another) and 12 rescues (involves boats and other equipment to extricate from high water) from the flooding with 84 evacuations.  The American Red Cross continues to keep their shelter open at Atherton High School and Greater Faith Missionary Church is also assisting the community with a shelter.   With 1000 calls made into MetroSafe from 10pm until 2am our volume has dropped to less than half of that number since 2amto present.

A flash flood warning was declared  until 8:45 a.m. Sunday.

Heavy rain and the threat of more showers today also led to the early closure of the St. James Art Fair for the first time in its history. It closed late Saturday afternoon and will not be open for the final day today.

Here's is a list of road closures from MetroSafe as of Sunday morning:
