Herald-Leader Reports Cuts, Furloughs

The Lexington Herald-Leader has announced cuts to staff and employees are being forced to take a second week of furloughs this year.The paper reported Monday that it plans to cut the equivalent of 10 positions including two unnamed executive committee members. Others cuts come from the general administration, circulation, news and operations divisions.According to a staff report, employees received an email regarding the cuts and furloughs by email from publisher Rufus Friday. In the email Friday says a slower than expected recession recovery has forced the difficult decision and year-over-year revenue remains down.The lay offs will bring staffing levels to the equivalent of 216 full-time employees. Prior to the first round of cuts in 2008, the paper had the equivalent of 370 employees.The paper is owned by the McClatchy Company from California.
