Indiana Delays Vote on School Gun Mandate Bill

The Indiana state House will vote Monday on a bill that would grant school districts funds for school resource officers and to improve school security.  The proposal will not include a provision that was introduced by amendment, which would have required all schools to train and arm at least one employee in order to protect students.   That amendment was made in the House Education Committee this month, but faced opposition from Gov. Mike Pence and several lawmakers. State Rep. Jud McMillin introduced another amendment on the House floor that allows a board to study the issue over the summer. “Things were happening so fast there at the state House that we were going to take some steps that were going to be pretty impactful to schools. I wanted to make sure we got to the right answer," he says. The committee is expected to report back to the General Assembly by December.
