Indiana Meetings Set on New Area Code for 812 Region

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has scheduled aseries of public meetings on the addition of a new telephone area code in southern and south central Indiana. The commission’s Danielle McGrath says because of cell phones and other devices, the region served by the 812 area code is running out of numbers."According to reports that we’re receiving, there will be no further numbers available by March of 2015," McGrath said. The hearings will be held for officials to inform the public about the options the commission is considering and to hear any citizen comments. In recent years, most regulators have opted for an area code overlay, meaning those in the old area code don’t have to change their numbers.   It does require ten-digit dialing for local calls. The hearings begin in March.
