JCPS Hosts Equity Summit, Asks Public To Help Solve Existing Disparities

The Jefferson County school district is asking the public to join the discussion on how local education can be more equitable.

Jefferson County Public Schools will release its equity scorecard data to the public Monday morning, which will highlight where schools should direct resources to close achievement gaps and to provide equal opportunities for all students. The equity scorecards were developed over the past several months with input from several educators and community leaders. They measure four areas, including discipline, literacy, college-and-career readiness, and school culture. The idea is to show the district where they need to pick up the effort.  Louisville’s NAACP chapter president Raoul Cunningham says it’ll provide information that his organization has been requesting for a while.   “The fact that the information and the data will be public, it should give the community a better picture of where JCPS stands in terms of accomplishing the goals that they say they want to accomplish," he says. JCPS has been criticized in the past for underperforming and for many issues—like disparities among minority student suspensions—that are common among large urban school districts. Recent state accountability data showed some positive trends for JCPS and many school districts across Kentucky. But the scorecards are meant to address both systemic issues across the district and at individual schools. The data being released Monday will not disaggregate school level data, though some schools will be highlighted in each section as "model" schools.  The data will be discussed during a public event at the district offices at 3332 Newburg Road at 8:30 am. Following a JCPS presentation, participants will also discuss how the city and district can improve student equity. (Image via Shutterstock)
