JCPS Superintendent Evaluation Process Begins

The process of evaluating the performance of Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent Donna Hargens begins at Tuesday evening's school board meeting. The evaluation process is a mandatory, said Brad Hughes, spokesman for the Kentucky School Board Association. He also said it is an important process.“It’s probably next to setting tax rates and the budget as one of the most important decisions a school board has to make over the course of a year,” he said. The seven member school board received training on the process from the Kentucky School Board Association during last month’s meeting.Hughes said it is a process that could take a considerable amount of time or it could be completed by the next scheduled meeting.  He said the KSBA recommends board members take at least two sessions to discuss concerns or develop goals for the superintendent.Board member Linda Duncan says  Tuesday is Hargens’ chance to “giver her overview of what things have happened” during the past school year and address any goals that have or have not been met.“For us, it is a very significant process,” she said.Hargens’ last annual evaluation was a positive, as WFPL reported in June 2013. Since then, JCPS has made high-profiles moves, such as closing thestruggling Myers Middle School and launching the School of Innovation competition. JCPS also received a critical state audit. She has been superintendent at JCPS since 2011.  Tonight's board meeting is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Van Hoose Education Center.
