Kentucky Community and Technical College System Freezes Tuition in 2015-2016

The Kentucky Community and Technical College System will keep its tuition the same for the next academic year.

In the first tuition-rate decision of President Jay Box's tenure, the KCTCS Board of Regents voted Friday to repeal its decision this summer to raise tuition. Box took over the role in January.

The vote means in-state students will pay $147 per credit hour; out-of-state students from counties contiguous to Kentucky will pay $294; all other out-of-state students will pay $515.

In an interview with WFPL, Box said state cuts have forced the system to raise tuition on students in the past. Now, the 17 colleges that make up the KCTCS system need to all do their part to make up the $5 million cost of foregoing a tuition increase, he said.

“We’ve worked with our college presidents to help them identify where there are areas where they may find ways to reduce costs," said Box.

It’s too early to say if layoffs will be necessary at some of the colleges, he said, but schools have begun freezing certain open positions.

“They’ll be making tough decisions in the next few months to try to bring their budgets in line with what they’ll need for next year," said Box.

KCTCS has finished the last three years with a financial deficit, and enrollment has dipped in recent years.

The system represents 72 campuses around the state.
