Kentucky is poised to get about $5 million in AmeriCorps grants to shore up community-based social services programs across the state, according to Governor Steve Beshear's office.Most of the money will go to education programs.More than $500,000 will be used to provide additional tutoring in math and reading for low-achieving students at Morehead State University. Nearly $800,000 will fund Operation UNITE efforts in Prestonsburg for math tutoring and drug prevention courses. And just les than $300,000 will support Teach for America in Hazard, which aims to get more teachers into the area’s low-income, rural schools.But education isn’t limited to schools. The Kentucky Domestic Violence Association will receive money for its Economic Empowerment Corps, which will “connect survivors and their children with social services.About 9,100 Kentuckians have participated in the federal AmeriCorp program since it started 20 years ago.(Image via Shutterstock)
