The Kentucky Department of Public Health will use a $1.7 million federal grant toward efforts to promote physical activity and nutrition, reduce obesity and prevent chronic disease.
Kentucky is one of 32 states getting funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help improve its dismal health statistics.
The department’s Connie Gayle-White says health officials will use the money to establish prevention programs and manageable approaches to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“Not only does this generation going to school learning about being healthy, we are also going to be working with their parents at the worksite so they can both come home and work on being a healthy family,” Gayle-White says.
According to a recent report from the United Health Foundation, Kentucky ranks 50th nationwide in preventable hospitalizations and 44th in overall state health.
