In a sit-down interview with reporters in his Capitol office, Beshear said he would try to find money to put toward school safety and textbooks.
“We’re gonna have to find the political will to take some step to create enough revenue that we can make those reinvestments,” Beshear said. “And there are two areas that I’m determined that we look at: One is tax reform, and that is modernizing our tax system so that as our economy grows our revenues will grow; and the other is expanded gaming.”
Beshear did not specify what tax reform measures he would advocate in his budget, but did indicate that he favors taxing services that are currently not taxed.
The General Assembly meets next month to put together a two-year state budget. It’s expected revenue will not match expenses.
