Kentucky School Districts Can Begin Adopting New Dropout Age

Kentucky school districts can begin adopting new polices today to increase the minimum dropout age to 18.

Under new law, the Kentucky legislature has granted school boards the option to increase the minimum dropout age, which is currently 16. Both the governor’s office and the Kentucky Department of Education have introduced a new initiative to encourage districts to approve the new policy. It’s called the 'Blitz to 96.' That’s how many school districts need to approve the new dropout policy before all school districts statewide will be required to follow suit within four years. The education department is also giving the first 57 districts that do so a $10,000  grant.Districts that implement the new policy this coming school year will have two years to implement their plans, which may involve more strategies to reach students who would otherwise dropout of school.Jefferson County Public Schools has long supported the increased dropout age and the school board passed a resolution to approve the new age this year. The next scheduled board meeting is July 8.District 7 board member Chris Brady has requested the board consider a short special meeting to adopt the new policy. He says the request is, in part, symbolic. (Image via Shutterstock.com)
