Kentucky's School Safety Subcommittee Meets This Afternoon

Kentucky’s House Subcommittee on School Safety will listen to testimony from officials Friday afternoon for the second time since its creation.

House Speaker Greg Stumbo created the special temporary subcommittee to address school safety following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. Last week the panel heard from educators, law enforcement and officials with the Kentucky Center for School Safety. This week the panel will hear from Franklin County Sheriff Pat Melton, Wolfe County social studies teacher Brandon McWhorter,  Montgomery County Schools assistant superintendent Phil Rison and district security Mike Martin and David Points, executive director of Montgomery Community Development, Inc.Subcommittee chair Richard Henderson has told WFPL the panel will listen to both short and long-term options for improving schools safety, but he says lack of funding will likely be an issue when it comes to making change.Further, Henderson says improving school safety will likely require more than one new law. He’s says he personally plans on introducing several bills, one of which would make the school safety subcommittee permanent.
