Louisville Cardinals Advance to Final Four, but Ware Seriously Injured

The Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball team advance to its second straight Final Four on Sunday, but a serious injury in the first half cast a pall over the game.

With about 6 minutes to go in the first half, guard Kevin Ware broke his right leg—a  serious injury that visibly upset the Louisville players and coaches a caused a lengthy break in play.

Still, the Cardinals expanded on a three-point halftime lead to beat the No. 2-seeded Duke Blue Devils 85-63 in Indianapolis to reach the Final Four.

Guard Russ Smith led the Cardinals with 23 points.

The Cardinals, the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, will next play the Wichita State Shockers—a No. 9  seed—on Saturday in Atlanta. The Syracuse Orange and Michigan Wolverines, both No. 4 seeds—play in the other Final Four game.

It’s UofL’s 10th Final Four in program history and first back-to-back appearance since 1982-83.
