Louisville Chosen to Receive Technical Help Implementing Sustainability Projects

Louisville has been chosen to participate in the first group of cities included in Portland State University’s Urban Sustainability Accelerator Program. The program will provide the city with technical assistance to implement green infrastructure initiatives. The program will give Louisville—as well as four other cities selected to be part of the first group—consultants to help it enhance green infrastructure in the city. They’ll do that with a team of people who already work for Metro Government…people in the city’s planning department, the Air Pollution Control District and Metropolitan Sewer District.Louisville Sustainability Director Maria Koetter says the program’s focus will be on implementation: taking projects that are already in conceptual stages and making them a reality. She says geographically, the project will focus on Fourth Street, including the area south of Broadway.“I think it helps us build on other things going on around town,” she said. “There’s so much going on in NuLu, and taking it to the south side of Broadway is really exciting.”Koetter says the team will look at ways to address some of the goals listed in Louisville’s recently-released sustainability plan, like increasing green roofs, better managing storm water runoff and mitigating the urban heat island effect. The other cities chosen for the program are various entities in Waco, Texas; Portland, Maine; Sacramento, California; Wichita, Kansas; and El Paso, Texas.
